Euthanizing Horses

Horse racing is a tough sport. At Saratoga, it's even tougher to handicap horses because the fields are filled with a lot of competitive horses. This summer, I think 5 horses have had to been put down after running races. If a horse pulls up during a race, it's typically because he or she hurt their leg. Most of the time when they hurt their leg, they have to put the horse down. I never understood the reason why they did that. I think one reason is because once a horse gets hurt, they have a greater chance of catching a disease. Another reason they are put down is because they would be in a lot of pain as they try to recover. A big name very popular horse pulled up today and was euthanized. It said that he would have gone through a lot of pain in the next months while recovering and he might not have lived through it. It's horrible that horses sometimes die during races. Unfortunately there's really nothing that can be done about it.
