Remembering 9/11/01

It's scary to think that the horrific attacks on America took place 12 years ago on this date. It's also scary to know that not one of the students in my elementary school were born yet. I think a large majority of the kids don't know what happened on this date. I know one of the sixth grade teachers said that she was going to show a video clip about 9/11 to her students today. Yes, it's a horrible topic. However, they need to know what happened. They need to know why this day is so important in history. We are surrounded by terrible events happening everyday. Although I know you don't want to scare kids, they need to be informed of some of these events so they aren't even more terrified if something big happens. On December 14, it will be one year since the shootings at Sandy Hook. I know we tried to shield kids from hearing about that, but it's impossible. The sooner kids learn about tragic events, the better off they will be if tragedy strikes again.
